What Are Porcelain Veneers?

Porcelain veneers are a type of dental product that bonds to the front of the existing teeth. These thin shells are made of porcelain ceramic material and designed to match the color of your teeth. They do not hurt, and they can remain present for as long as 20 years, providing you with a near-natural look. They work to fix many of the problems you may have with your smile including gaps in your teeth, poor alignment, chipped teeth, or discoloration.

Porcelain veneers are ideal for those who do not have time for traditional treatments such as whitening or braces, which can take months to benefit from. When you visit a skilled and experienced dentist like Bunker Hill Dentistry, you will gain access to an impressive smile through the application of these products.

These particular veneers are designed to be very easy to use and they last longer and provide a stronger, better, long-term solution for repairing your teeth. Because this wafer-thin product is custom made to fit your mouth, they can take 30 to 45 days to create. Once bonded to the existing teeth, they create a like-new look for your smile. Dr. Le is happy to discuss how well they work for your needs.

What Are Some Advantages of Porcelain Veneers?

Most people benefit from the investment in porcelain veneers. First, consider that these teeth applications do not require any type of painful treatment or long process for fixing the underlying problem you may have. You do not have to wear braces to straighten your teeth or undergo other treatments. As a cosmetic procedure, these veneers can give you a renewed, natural smile in no time. This makes them ideal for many people.

They also offer key benefits that other products, such as composites, do not. For example, they are stronger and able to last as long as 15 to 20 years in some cases. Find out how long you can expect porcelain veneers to last and tips to make them last longer.

They also retain their good-as-new look for several years. This is because they do not stain (although they can appear stained, even if the veneers themselves do not stain – learn how). Nothing sticks to them. Those who may be hard on their teeth – such as those who smoke or regularly eat hard candy – will benefit from this durability.

They are also natural looking when installed by a skilled and experienced dentist. For those who are looking for an impressive smile, this particular type of treatment can be an ideal choice for you. The advantages of porcelain veneers make them an ideal option for those who have sizing, gaps, or discoloration concerns they wish to overcome.

The Typical 3-Phase Veneers Procedure – What to Expect

Phase One:

You will receive a complete oral examination, including x-rays and photographs. An in depth understanding of your current state will allow Dr. Le to create a realistic plan for your transformation. Your teeth will be cleaned and any outstanding dental priorities will be addressed. All issues such as cavities, fractures, chipped teeth, etc. must be taken care of prior to veneer application.

Phase Two:

Dr. Le will take an impression of your teeth and create a diagnostic model work-up. He will prepare sample teeth to mimic the final result. Modifications will be made based on your feedback and then the model will be used to fabricate a guide for the temporary veneers.

When you are ready to proceed, after optimal preparation of the teeth, impressions are made, temporary veneers are inserted and worn for one to two weeks. This period of time allows you to evaluate your new smile and make notes of any changes you would like to make before proceeding with the final porcelain veneers.

Phase Three:

When you return to our dental office, you will give your evaluation to Dr. Le so that modifications can be made. Then photographs and impressions will be taken so that the technician has all of the necessary information to create exactly what you have envisioned and approved.

In the delivery visit, Dr. Le will prepare your teeth for permanent veneers cementation. He will also review important care and maintenance instructions for you new smile as well as setting up and follow-up visit within the next 7-14 days to check on the bite and your satisfaction.

Porcelain Veneers vs Lumineers/No-Prep Veneers

Lumineers are a brand name porcelain veneer. You may hear them spoken about quite often and they can be a good option for you. They are also known as prepless or no-prep veneers. This is because they do not require any drilling to put them in place. They can be a good option for those looking for a fast solution. But, they do have their limitations. Lumineers are a good product, but they have limited color options. Unlike porcelain veneers, your dentist can only choose from a specific set of color choices. With porcelain veneers, on the other hand, your dentist has more ability to create a very specific, natural-looking color.

Porcelain veneers are also beneficial because they reduce the risk of inflammation, irritation, and degradation that occurs in Lumineers. This is due to the more bulky design of this product. They also have a very flat, basic look. As a result of this, they tend to have a less natural look to them than true porcelain veneers, like those Dr. Le installs.

Dental Bonding – An Alternative to Veneers

Dr. Le sometimes recommends the use of dental bonding as an alternative to porcelain veneers. This process, where composite material is applied directly onto your teeth by a dentist, allows for us to create solutions for you chairside. This is faster as well as less expensive option compared to porcelain veneers. In order for this procedure to be effective, though, you simply must work with a highly-skilled dentist. It is a true form of art, and without the skill or abilities, this procedure may not be ideal.

However, Dr. Le does have this level of skill and experience. For this reason, we often recommend this type of composite material. It is less expensive, takes about two to three hours to install, and creates an impressively natural smile. Though they do not last as long – usually up to 10 years – dental bonding allows for your dentist to fix any chips that occur within a short period of time. This is unlike veneers which typically take a significant process to repair.
