Preventive & Restorative Dental Care – Educating Kids to Take Care of Their Teeth

It’s important to teach kids how to take care of their teeth from a young age. As a parent, here is how you can teach your child to take care of their teeth:

  • Teach and encourage your kids to brush their teeth two times a day.  You should brush their teeth yourself up to a certain age (typically 8 years) when they can be able to do it by themselves. Brushing helps clean off food particles that get caught in between the teeth and foster bacteria growth which can lead to dental problems such as plaque.
  • Get your kids to pick their own toothbrushes and toothpastes. By getting them the flavor they enjoy or love, it will be easier for them to love brushing often.
  • Teach your children the importance of flossing, which is just as important as brushing. It helps clean between the teeth where germs and food particles often get stuck.
  • Encourage your kids to take tooth-friendly foods and avoid too much sugar-filled foods and drinks because they are very harmful to their teeth.
  • Arrange regular dental visits for your child, at least once in every 6 months, for dental routine cleanings, check-ups and fluoride treatment. Making youngsters accustomed to regular dental checks makes it easy for them to get comfortable with the dentist and see the importance of dental visits even into their adulthood.
  • Lead by example. Show your family the fun and importance of practicing good oral health and they will follow suit.

Dental Sealants for Additional Cavity Protection

In addition to teaching kids how to brush, you can give them a leg up on decay-causing bacteria by treating their molars with dental sealant. This thin plastic coating goes on quickly and easily yet lasts up to 10 years, sealing off small holes in their molars before cavities can take root.

When Should a Child Start Visiting a Dentist?

One great misconception many parents have is that there is little point in taking their infant or toddler to a dentist at such an early age because their primary teeth will eventually fall out. This is a huge mistake because even though they are not visible to you, your kid’s permanent teeth are growing under their deciduous teeth and it’s important for a dentist to check if everything in your child’s mouth is developing as it’s supposed to.

During this visit, the dentist will thoroughly inspect your child’s mouth to flag any issues and generally advise you on how to take care of the child’s teeth. With Dr. Le, most of his young patients remain with him even in adulthood.

Children should begin visiting a dentist when their first tooth appears or no later than their first birthday. At Bunker Hill Dentistry, we usually treat children from the age of 5 upwards, although we do also treat younger children.

What Happens During a Child’s Visit to the Dentist?

Child dental visits are often exciting and friendly for your children. During a dental checkup, the doctor strives to make the young person relaxed by cheering them up, telling jokes to them, putting on a cartoon show that your kid enjoys, or enticing them in any other way just to make sure that they are not nervous or scared.

In most cases, the parent accompanies their child into the dentist’s office. The dentist then uses their tools to gently inspect the child’s mouth for signs of tooth decay, gum disease, tongue infections, or fractured teeth.

If it’s a regular visit and there are no problems identified, the dentist will proceed to clean the child’s teeth with a special tool that blasts water on and between their teeth to wash away any hard-to-reach germs.

During regular checkups and cleaning, sedation is not necessary. It’s only used during tooth extraction, tooth surgery, and other dental procedures that are painful. See what sedation options we offer for children at Bunker Hill Dentistry.

During fluoride treatment, the doctor allows the child to choose their own treatment flavors – cherry, mint, melon, caramel, bubble gum, and more – and kids really enjoy this.

Children’s Dental Insurance

Most insurance coverages only pay 100% for fluoride treatment, regular checkups, cleaning, and sealing twice a year. These are the only procedures that will be totally free under most insurance. As a parent, we recommend taking your child for checkup and treatment during these times to take advantage of the free services. Insurances cover 100% on these dental care practices because they are preventive methods of care, and they would love to see your child’s teeth healthy to avoid paying for costly treatment care.

At Bunker Hill Dentistry, we are an approved provider of many dental PPO plans. We will collect your estimated co-pay and applicable deductibles at the time of service to make it convenient for you and your schedule.
